Supporting you in your local Community

Koomarri provides support for people to connect and be actively involved in the life of their local community. Once we get to know you through developing a personalised plan, Koomarri can support you in participating in skill development, hobbies and community activities based on your personal goals and aspirations.

At Koomarri, we acknowledge that everyone is an individual – we are different ages, we have had different life experiences and we like different things. This is why Koomarri will offer you:

      • support that matches your interests and aspirations
      • choice about the people (or staff) who work with you
      • support that is best suited to you and what you need to be happy and engaged in your local community life
      • opportunities to connect with people and places in your community that interest you.

Koomarri can offer you the following support to engage in community life:

      Tailored one on one support

Koomarri can provide one on one support to help you achieve greater independence, develop skills or achieve personal goals – in any area of your life.  Some examples of how you might utilise this support include such things as travel training, money management, and attending community and cultural events.

      Nutrition and Meal Preparation

We offer two hour classes in nutrition and meal preparation.  Participants learn about healthier eating and basic meal preparation using simple, fresh ingredients and easy to follow instructions.  Students are taught all aspects of kitchen and food safety.  Classes consist of a maximum of eight to ten students working in pairs.  Classes are run from the Woden area.

      Creative classes

We offer three hour creative classes in visual art and creative. Our classes include painting and drawing, mosaics and beads, working with wood objects, air dry clay, paper (sculpture, cards and scrapbooking), textiles, glass, stone, plastic and metal.  We tailor each of the creative projects to participants’ interests.

Creative classes run continuously throughout the year, from both our Belconnen and Queanbeyan sites, and you can enrol in these at any time.

       Social groups

Koomarri offers a range of groups aimed at building friendships and being part of recreational activities. These groups are tailored to participant interests and include a young ladies group, a women’s group and a men’s group.  They are run from Koomarri at our Phillip site.

      Health and fitness

Koomarri is looking to develop future programs for participants to engage in physical exercise, and we are taking expressions of interest in health and fitness programs now.
