    Support to develop work skills

Koomarri has vacancies in work skills courses that are customised for people with mild and moderate intellectual disability.

These courses can be accessed by ACT and NSW residents with NDIS funding. People without NDIS funding can access this on a fee for service arrangement.

    Career Discovery Program

Koomarri's Career Discovery Program will help to prepare you for entry-level positions in open employment.
The program has three main components:
    1. Discovering Personal Genius™
Through a series of informal interviews we will discover the participant's interests and skills. The interviews will take place with the person and their support network in settings where they feel most comfortable whether that be at home, at a cafe or doing an activity they enjoy. From these interviews we will identify their ideal conditions of employment, skills and vocational themes to help target future job searches.
    2. Classroom based learning
For Term 1 participants will take part in classroom based learning that will focus on preparation for work experience, discussion of appropriate behaviours and further exploration of skills.  From Term 2 participants will further develop their job readiness skills and share their on the job experiences.
    3. Work experience
From Term 2 onwards participants will take part in a range of different work experience placements based on their interests and skills.

How will participants benefit from the program?
    • Information about your ideal conditions of employment
    • A list of vocational themes to help future job searches
    • An electronic resume - a visual demonstration of your skills
    • Work experience

When are the classes being run and from where?
    There are two options:
    Term 1 – Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.30am – 12.30pm, Terms 2 - 4 Tuesdays 9.30 – 12.30; or
    Term 1 – Thursdays and Fridays 9.30am – 12.30pm, Terms 2-4 Thursdays 9.30 – 12.30
The days and times for work experience will be run at a time that suits you and your work experience hosts.
The first class is on Tuesday 6 February 2018.
Classes will be run from Phillip.
    Who is delivering the program?
The program will be delivered by Koomarri career coaches who have received customised employment training with the Centre for Disability Employment Research and Practice (CDERP), who are supported by Griffin Hammis Associates the world leaders in the field of Customised Employment.

Can I use SLES funding for this program?

Group based classroom learning is not for me, but I want to do the other aspects of the program
From April 2018, we will offer a Career Coaching service which includes:
    • facilitating the process of Discovering Personal Genius
    • canvassing businesses for unpaid and paid work opportunities and/or establishing a micro-business for the person; and
    • post work/experience job placement by job coach.
